The Dreamachine is a stroboscopic flicker device that produces visual stimuli. You can easily built one yourself. This is what you need:

  • a functioning turn table device
  • a big role of dark coloured carton paper
  • a sharp knife to cut geometrical shapes into the carton
  • a light bulb with a long cable, hanging from the ceiling or from any kind of stand

There are different theories on which kinds of geometrical shapes are influencing the visual stimuli in which ways exactely. You can experiment with different shapes by yourself, or copy those (original version of Bryon Gysin):

Cut out the shapes and fixate the carton paper standing in a round shape on the turntable. Hang the light bulb right into the middle of the tunnel and turn it on. Then turn on the turn table device. Switch off all other lights in the room.

A Dreamachine is "viewed" with the eyes closed: the pulsating light stimulates the optic nerve and thus alters the brain's electrical oscillations. Users experience increasingly bright, complex patterns of color behind their closed eyelids. The patterns become shapes and symbols, swirling around, until the user feels surrounded by colors. After a while you can experience a drugless high, or even psychedelic visions. These experiences may sometimes be quite intense, but to escape from it, you only need to open your eyes.
